A small community keeping the Czech language and culture alive in the Algarve.

There is a Czech community in the Algarve, especially around Faro. While there isn’t an official Czech school here, Česká školička at the Conservatório Regional do Algarve offers a beautiful complementary option for Czech children.

Founded in September 2014 under the auspices of the Club of Czechs and Slovaks in Portugal and supported by the Honorary Consulate of the Czech Republic in Faro, this weekend school brings families together. Most Czech parents enrol their children in Portuguese public or private schools and then meet here on Saturday mornings. Some families also combine this with Czech online schooling, creating a balanced mix between local education and maintaining their native language.

Supporting Czech children

Behind this project are five Czech women living in the Algarve. Each of them brings different experience and knowledge, but they all share the same goal: to support Czech children, stay connected with families, and create a warm, open community using modern approaches to education.

The weekend classes also work as a small community hub. The school is open to children aged 3 to 15, who learn together in mixed-age groups. This creates a natural space for inspiration, collaboration, and stronger social connections. The team respects each child’s individual needs, and Czech is taught depending on each child’s level and confidence.

Introducing Czech culture

The aim is to introduce the Czech language, traditions, and culture in a playful and natural way. Activities often include storytelling, creative workshops, songs, seasonal traditions, and group projects. The approach is inspired by different educational philosophies, including Montessori, with an emphasis on curiosity, independence, and learning through experience.

Raising bilingual or even trilingual children is beautiful—but it also comes with challenges. Each language usually plays a different role in a child’s life: one at home, another at school, and sometimes a third with grandparents. This is why the Czech school focuses on building a positive relationship with the language—so children don’t see it as something they have to learn, but as a way to connect with their roots and identity.

Erasmus students

Every six months, Czech Erasmus students join the school and become part of the teaching process. They bring fresh energy, new perspectives, and an international element that enriches the experience for both children and parents.

For many families, this is more than just a school—it’s a place to belong, share experiences, and keep a piece of home alive while living abroad.
